When an old person dies, a library is lost!
...This proverb, while rueful, is also a call to action to preserve the experiences and knowledge of our loved ones before they're gone forever.
I had the privilege of spending countless hours with my father, Bill Bourke, as he told of his early childhood memories in Ireland and immigration to the great city of Chicago. "Oh the fun we had", he explained, as he discovered the Irish camaraderie that was already present upon his arrival and how he got a job being Just A Boy From Home. Bill met and married Kitty Morley from County Mayo, raised a family and fully embraced his opportunity to realize the American Dream.
There was singing and dancing in the neighborhood pubs and the "craic" was mighty as a new culture developed and instilled upon the next generation. But still, for Bill Bourke, there was an innate loneliness that could be felt in a room full of people for the mother he left behind in the tiny cottage, at the end of the road, in the Village of Ballymacredmond, near the town of Ballina, in the County of Mayo, Ireland.
You will enjoy this captivating story of a time past that so often fades away as the years go on. There are lyrics to 42 songs, Irish wit, and recipes for Irish soda bread, the Irish wedding cake and many more.
I truly believe you will enjoy this book. It was written from my heart!
